cutomise php registration form ????

I've created a registration form with php and a database with wamp .. however the form lists vertically and I want certain parts of it to be side by side , is it possible to adjust the form using Css and if so how? how do i reference php in css ,and the colums or customise the layout in  PHP really stuck here . many thanks  in advance
